Layang Layang Island is a small atoll in the middle of the South China Sea belonging to Malaysia. It is situated 300 km northwest of Kota Kinabalu in Sabah. Layang Layang Island Resort is the only resort and diving operator available on this small coral atoll but it has access to over 20 sites from coral reefs to the steep walls plummeting to 2000m below and swarming with tropical fish and pelagics. Note that the resort only operates between February and August each year, and the highlight is definitely the scalloped hammerhead sharks which are there from March to August, and often performing mating rituals between March and May.
On the artificially enlarged island is a bird sanctuary, a runway stretching the length of the island, a small naval base and the dive resort. There is no beach and no house reef on the island.

How to get there
The resort operates charter flights from Kota Kinabalu every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.
You need to arrive at Kota Kinabalu the night before as flights are early: Kota Kinabalu to Layang Layang departs at 5.45am and arrives at 6.45am. Layang Layang to Kota Kinabalu departs at 7.15am and arrives at 8.15am, and note, these flight schedules are subject to change.
What to expect
The in-house PADI dive centre at Layang Layang is professionally run by a team of experienced and qualified instructors, with equipment rental and PADI dive training available.Certified divers get 3 boat dives daily. On your arrival day, there are two dives on offer and 3 dives on each subsequent day. On the last day, only one early morning dive is allowed before flying back the next day.
With fast speed dive boats, you are at fantastic dive sites in almost no time. There are approximately 20 dive sites which are not more than 10-30 minutes away from the resort. The dive times are scheduled for 3 daily dives: 1st dive 8.00am, 2nd dive 11.30am and 3rd dive 3.00pm. Divers get a thorough briefing and dive with their buddy. The maximum dive time is limited to 60 minutes per dive and may sometimes be a little shorter.
Layang Layang is a wall diving mecca. As many as 13 coral reefs have formed here, creating breathtaking underwater scenery. From the edge of the atoll, the reef walls drop 2000m (6500ft) into the deep blue sea. Be ready for stunning dives with mostly fantastic visibility 30-60m (100-200ft). The combination of pristine walls, deep water is a recipe for pelagic marine life and all sorts of colourful tropical fish. The highlight is definitely the scalloped hammerhead sharks which are there from March to August, and often performing mating rituals between March and May.
This remote atoll is definitely worth a dive trip, but be aware it is still a pretty big resort and it can get a bit hectic at the height of the season in April.
