With a coastline stretching 2700km, bordering the Indian Ocean to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west, diving South Africa offers a thrilling and extremely varied experience full of challenge and adventure.
The milder tropical climate of the northeastern KwaZulu-Natal province offers warm water, stunning beaches and some of the country’s richest marine life. One of the best spots is Sodwana Bay, perfectly positioned within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Further south, Aliwal Shoal is the staging post for some epic shark diving with bull sharks, hammerheads, tiger sharks, blacktips, and the local favourites, sand tiger sharks. And a sight not to be missed on the KwaZulu Natal coast is the annual sardine run, a high-energy event that draws countless sharks, game fish, dolphins, birds, and seals to feast on giant bait balls of sardines.
On South Africa’s Western Cape, the cooler waters and kelp forests of the Atlantic coast are home to seal colonies and African penguins which in turn attract apex predators. Towns such as False Bay and Gansbaai are renowned shark cage diving destinations, and while great white sharks are what everyone wants to see, there is an excellent chance of encountering seven-gill sharks, dolphins, and even orcas.
When To Dive South Africa
- The northeastern coast can be dived year-round with temperatures rarely dropping below 20C. The sardine run occurs annually between May and July, with the peak time in late June. Temperature: 20 – 28C
- The Atlantic side is wilder and colder with the summer months of October through to March preferred for diving. Temperatures can drop below 12C, and conditions can be challenging. Temperature 112-18C
Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks
Aliwal Shoal, located off the coast of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, is particularly known for its shark encounters and diverse marine life. It’s a rocky reef system, a submerged ancient sand dune, offering a variety of dive sites with depths ranging from shallow reefs to deeper wrecks.
Protea Banks, South Africa’s biggest shark dive destination, is an hour’s drive south from Aliwal Shoal jump-off point; Umkomaas. This is the best place in South Africa to dive with sharks, depending on the time of year, you can see up to 7 different varieties: ragged-tooth sharks, oceanic blacktips, bull sharks, tiger sharks, plus two varieties of hammerheads, scalloped and great hammerhead sharks.
Sodwana Bay
Sodwana Bay is located on the northern reaches of South Africa’s KwaZulu Natal in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. This enormous bay offers a diverse range of marine life and coral formations in warm, clear semi-tropical waters. It’s a great destination for divers of all skill levels, boasts over 1200 species of fish and is home to several coral reefs, including the most southerly hard coral reefs in the world. The Bay is a haven for marine life, featuring a wide diversity of fish, with large populations of parrotfish, triggerfish, moray eels, turtles, butterfly fish, angel fish, as well as huge schools of snapper, fusiliers and larger creatures like potato cods, manta rays, and ragged-tooth sharks.
Events: The Sardine Run – May to July
The South African Sardine Run is an incredible natural event where millions of sardines migrate up the coast, attracting a massive feeding frenzy of marine predators. This is a unique spectacle, usually experienced on snorkel due to the dynamic nature of the evolving events, with dolphins, sharks, whales, and seabirds all converging to feast on the sardines. Being mid-winter, water temperatures are cool (13-21ºC), requiring full cold-water gear, and visibility can vary. Boat launches are from the beach and can sometimes be aborted if the surf is too big to navigate. The run typically happens along the coast of KwaZulu-Natal, with popular dive sites near Port St. Johns and Chintsa.

Kruger National Park, in northeastern South Africa, is one of Africa’s largest game reserves. Its high density of wild animals includes the Big 5: lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos. Hundreds of other mammals make their home here, as do diverse bird species such as vultures, eagles and storks. Mountains, bush plains and tropical forests are all part of the landscape.
Thula Thula Private Game Reserve. Only 2 hours from Durban, this former hunting ground of legendary Zulu King Shaka boasts a unique diversity of landscapes and wildlife. It was also home of conservationist Lawrence Anthony, author of the best-selling book – Elephant Whisperer – the story of his rescue and special relationship with a herd of seven elephants.
Bayala Private Safari Lodges are situated within Zuka Private Game Reserve, a Big 5 Game Reserve in South Africa just 90 minutes’ drive from Sodwana Bay.
