Dive Sites

Wall Diving and Macro Life
Bunaken Marine Park is famous for its breathtaking vertical drop-offs, where overhangs, caves, and crevices shelter an array of marine life. Expect encounters with pygmy seahorses, ghost pipefish, reef sharks, eagle rays, and schools of tuna and trevally. Green and hawksbill turtles are frequently spotted gliding through the reefs.

Muck Diving and Wreck Exploration
The mainland sites feature world-class muck diving, where divers can spot rare critters like blue-ringed octopuses, ornate ghost pipefish, and hairy squat lobsters. There is also a sponge-encrusted wreck nearby, offering an eerie yet fascinating dive experience.

Diving Conditions

Bunaken Marine Park boasts stunning visibility, often reaching 30-40 meters. The water temperature averages 28°C, making a 3mm wetsuit sufficient. Currents can be strong, so drift diving procedures are standard. Guides conduct current checks before each dive, and all divers use SMBs for surface signaling.

Boat Excursions

All dives are conducted via boat—shore diving is not possible due to strong currents. The resort ensures comfort and safety with well-maintained dive boats, each equipped with emergency oxygen, first aid kits, and refreshments.

Snorkeling Services

The reefs surrounding the island start very shallow and gradually deepen to around 5m before the wall plunges into the deep. Visibility is generally excellent year-round, averaging 30m, though tides near the mangroves may affect clarity. Currents can be strong, so guides always conduct current checks before entering the water, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.

Twice-daily snorkeling boat trips are available, with expert guides maintaining a 4:1 guest-to-guide ratio. Snorkelers receive detailed site briefings and can stay in the water for as long as they like. Night snorkeling is also available, offering a chance to see nocturnal marine life under high-powered torches.

  • The team at Diveplanit were tremendous help for my recent trip to Palau. The trip was a bit last minute, and bookings were filling up, so I appreciated Claire’s patience and first-hand knowledge as we tried to find the right combination of dates, flights and operators. Unsurprisingly, the trip was spectacular and ticked off multiple bucket list experiences.

    Steph R

  • Michelle is a legend. I didn't know how difficult it could be to organise travel and diving in Vanuatu! Having been there, I can only wonder at the organisation and care that went into making my trip special. There was even a cancelled flight that meant a rearrangement of activities on a couple of days. But it all went seamlessly. I would highly recommend Diveplanit.

  • Michelle was fantastic in helping with my recent PNG excursion. I got straightforward and detailed advice, and nothing was too much trouble. I had some package tweaks after committing to the initial trip, but the changes were no problem. There's no question whom I'll contact for my next South Pacific itinerary.

  • Had a fabulous trip diving at Ningaloo, all organised from the other side of the world by Claire at Diveplanit. When the airline cancelled my flights and I would’ve been stranded, she rescheduled them for me on a Sunday! That’s 7-star rating! 🙏 🥰
