Dive Lord Howe is the longest-established dive operator on Lord Howe Island, providing access to one of Australia’s most unique marine environments since 1978. Located approximately 600 kilometres off the east coast of Australia, the operation offers diving within the Lord Howe Island Marine Park, an area internationally recognised for its exceptional biodiversity and the world’s southernmost coral reef ecosystem. The island sits at the convergence of tropical and temperate ocean currents, creating an unusual blend of marine species rarely found together elsewhere in the world.
Divers visiting Lord Howe Island can explore a remarkable variety of underwater environments ranging from sheltered lagoon reefs and coral gardens to dramatic walls, offshore pinnacles, caves, and deep seamounts. The diversity of habitats supports everything from colourful reef fish and sea turtles to large pelagic species, making the destination appealing to photographers, marine life enthusiasts, and experienced divers seeking something different from mainland Australian dive destinations.

Facilities & Meals
As a dedicated dive centre rather than a resort, Dive Lord Howe provides a comprehensive range of diving services including equipment rental, guided diving, diver training, air fills, and safety support. The centre maintains modern scuba equipment including regulators, BCDs, dive computers, tanks, and specialty gear required for advanced diving activities.
While accommodation and meals are arranged independently through the island’s hotels and guesthouses, Dive Lord Howe works closely with local operators to coordinate diving schedules and activities throughout guests’ stays.
Activities
Beyond recreational scuba diving, Dive Lord Howe offers snorkelling excursions, private dive charters, fluorescent night dives, shark-focused experiences, refresher courses, and a full range of PADI diver training programs. Non-diving family members can participate in guided snorkelling tours and marine wildlife experiences within the island’s protected waters.
Staying Connected
Internet access on Lord Howe Island is available but can be slower and less reliable than mainland Australia due to the island’s remote location. Guests are encouraged to complete online training materials before arriving, particularly those participating in certification courses.
We Think . . .
Dive Lord Howe is an excellent choice for divers seeking flexible daily diving in a protected marine park with exceptional biodiversity. The combination of tropical and temperate marine life, unique reef systems, and access to the iconic Balls Pyramid creates a diving experience unlike anywhere else in Australia.
Lord Howe Island is located in the Tasman Sea approximately 600 kilometres east of mainland Australia. The island is surrounded by a protected marine park covering more than 465 square kilometres, helping preserve its extraordinary marine ecosystems and ensuring healthy reef environments.
The island sits at the meeting point of warm tropical waters flowing south from the Coral Sea and cooler temperate currents moving northward. This unique geographic position creates one of the most biologically diverse marine environments in the South Pacific, where tropical coral species coexist alongside temperate fish and invertebrates. The region also includes deep seamounts, offshore pinnacles, lagoon reefs, and the spectacular volcanic remnant of Balls Pyramid.
How to Get There
Lord Howe Island is accessible by scheduled flights from several Australian mainland cities. Visitor numbers are strictly controlled to protect the island’s environment, making advance bookings essential.
Upon arrival, guests can easily access Dive Lord Howe from their accommodation, with diving activities organised directly through the dive centre. Most visitors combine multiple days of diving with island sightseeing, hiking, and marine activities.
Leanda Lei Apartments
Established as a guesthouse in 1954 and later converted into self contained apartments, Leanda Lei is nestled amongst tranquil gardens, with spacious lawns and views towards Mount Gower and Lidgbird. Leanda Lei Apartments are conveniently located on Middle Beach Road and features a BBQ and picnic area, courtyard, tour / sightseeing desk, car rental desk, bicycle rentals, airport shuttle service, and onsite laundry, making it a great choice for accommodation when diving with Dive Lord Howe.

Diving Location Features
Diving around Lord Howe Island offers an extraordinary variety of underwater environments. Sheltered lagoon reefs provide ideal conditions for training and photography, while outer reef systems feature walls, caverns, swim-throughs, and coral-covered slopes. Offshore sites offer encounters with larger pelagic species and dramatic underwater topography.
The island’s location within a transition zone between tropical and temperate waters supports more than 500 species of fish and around 90 species of coral. Divers regularly encounter sea turtles, kingfish, schools of trevally, Galapagos sharks, eagle rays, and numerous endemic species found nowhere else on Earth.
Best Time to Dive
Diving is available year-round, although conditions vary throughout the seasons. The most popular diving period runs from September through May when water temperatures range between 20°C and 26°C and visibility is often at its best. During the warmer months from December to April, tropical fish populations increase and water temperatures reach their annual peak.
The cooler months from June to August offer excellent visibility and opportunities to encounter larger pelagic species, although sea conditions can occasionally limit access to offshore sites. Balls Pyramid excursions are generally most reliable during periods of settled weather between spring and autumn.
Dive Services
Dive Lord Howe offers guided boat dives, shore dives, refresher programs, introductory experiences, and a complete range of PADI certification courses. Daily schedules typically include double-tank morning dives and additional afternoon dives depending on weather and demand.
Divers can complete Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, Nitrox, and specialty certifications. Full equipment rental is available, including dive computers, wetsuits, regulators, BCDs, and safety equipment. Experienced dive guides provide detailed briefings tailored to current conditions and diver experience levels.
Private charters are available for photographers, experienced divers, and groups wishing to explore specific sites. Specialty experiences such as fluorescent night diving offer a unique perspective on the island’s nocturnal marine life.
Dive Sites
Lagoon Sites
The lagoon sites provide some of the most sheltered diving on Lord Howe Island and are ideal for beginner divers, snorkellers, training dives, and underwater photographers. These shallow reefs feature healthy coral gardens, sandy channels, and seagrass beds that support a surprising variety of marine life.
Divers frequently encounter bluefish, wrasse, butterflyfish, stingrays, sea turtles, and numerous juvenile fish species using the lagoon as a nursery habitat. The calm conditions and excellent natural lighting make these sites particularly rewarding for macro photography and relaxed exploration.
Reef & Outer Sites
The outer reef sites showcase the remarkable diversity that has made Lord Howe Island famous among marine biologists and experienced divers. Coral-covered reef slopes descend into deeper waters while walls, caves, and swim-throughs create dramatic underwater landscapes.
Marine life commonly includes large schools of kingfish, trevally, drummer, mackerel, turtles, moray eels, and reef sharks. The mix of tropical and temperate species means divers can observe unusual combinations of fish rarely seen together elsewhere in Australia.
Balls Pyramid
Balls Pyramid is widely regarded as one of Australia’s premier dive destinations. Rising dramatically from deep ocean waters approximately 23 kilometres southeast of Lord Howe Island, this towering volcanic pinnacle creates exceptional conditions for pelagic encounters.
The nutrient-rich waters surrounding the pyramid attract large schools of fish and apex predators throughout the year. Divers may encounter Galapagos sharks, hammerhead sharks, yellowtail kingfish, tuna, eagle rays, manta rays, and massive schools of baitfish. The steep walls are covered with colourful corals, sponges, and invertebrates, while visibility often exceeds 30 metres.
Due to its offshore location, access is highly weather dependent and generally reserved for experienced divers comfortable with open-ocean conditions.
Drift & Offshore Sites
Several offshore dive sites around Lord Howe Island feature moderate to strong currents that attract larger marine life. These dives allow divers to drift along reef edges and walls while observing pelagic species moving through the area.
Common sightings include kingfish, trevally, eagle rays, Galapagos sharks, turtles, tuna, and occasionally dolphins. The constant flow of nutrient-rich water supports abundant fish populations and healthy reef growth, making these sites among the most dynamic diving experiences around the island.
Night & Fluorescent Dives
Night diving reveals an entirely different side of Lord Howe Island’s marine ecosystem. As daylight fades, nocturnal species emerge from hiding and many reef inhabitants become significantly more active.
Divers regularly encounter hunting moray eels, Spanish dancers, crustaceans, sleeping parrotfish, octopus, and numerous invertebrates rarely seen during daytime dives. Fluorescent night dives add another dimension to the experience, revealing glowing corals, anemones, crustaceans, and fish that appear completely different under specialized ultraviolet lighting.
These specialty dives provide exceptional opportunities for underwater photography and allow divers to observe behaviours not visible during daylight hours.
