Diving around Lord Howe Island offers an extraordinary variety of underwater environments. Sheltered lagoon reefs provide ideal conditions for training and photography, while outer reef systems feature walls, caverns, swim-throughs, and coral-covered slopes. Offshore sites offer encounters with larger pelagic species and dramatic underwater topography.
The island’s location within a transition zone between tropical and temperate waters supports more than 500 species of fish and around 90 species of coral. Best Time to Dive
Diving is available year-round, although conditions vary throughout the seasons. The most popular diving period runs from September through May when water temperatures range between 20°C and 26°C and visibility is often at its best. During the warmer months from December to April, tropical fish populations increase and water temperatures reach their annual peak.
The cooler months from June to August offer excellent visibility and opportunities to encounter larger pelagic species, although sea conditions can occasionally limit access to offshore sites. Balls Pyramid excursions are generally most reliable during periods of settled weather between spring and autumn.

The nutrient-rich waters surrounding the pyramid attract large schools of fish and apex predators throughout the year.
