What we think…
Matafonua Lodge is a family-run eco retreat set against pristine white sand, turquoise lagoons and lush tropical gardens. The setting feels unhurried and remote — a perfect backdrop for underwater exploration and beachside relaxation alike. Its onsite dive centre and whale tours bring marine encounters right to your doorstep, while a range of land-based activities offers something for every guest.
Getting There: Fly into Nuku‘alofa (TBU) on Tonga’s main island of Tongatapu, then take a domestic flight to Ha‘apai (Pilolevu Airport). From there, resort staff typically arrange transfers to Matafonua Lodge on Foa Island. Direct flight schedules should be checked in advance as services can vary.
The lodge offers traditional Tongan-style beachfront fales, designed for comfort and connection with nature. Accommodation options include Double Fales with king or twin beds and Family Fales that can sleep up to 4–5 people with flexible bedding arrangements. All Fales have covered verandas or terraces opening directly onto the sand, electricity and power points for charging devices. All lodgings offer a relaxed island vibe, comfortable bedding, and easy access to the beach and resort facilities, making them ideal for couples, families and small groups alike.
Matafonua Lodge operates a PADI scuba dive centre right from the resort. Daily dive trips depart by boat to a variety of sites around Ha‘apai’s reef systems, featuring coral gardens, swim-throughs, pinnacles, tunnels and biodiverse underwater topography. Visibility commonly averages 30 m (100 ft) with water temperatures around 24–28 °C, and marine life sightings range from sharks, tuna, manta rays and turtles to colourful macro species. Courses are available for all levels, from introductory experiences to advanced certifications.
House Reef & Beach Diving
Divers can easily access a house reef close to the beach, and the lodge also offers beach-entry dives and boat-based explorations of more remote pinnacles. Equipment rental and instruction are available on site.
Whale Swimming & Watching
From mid-July through October, humpback whales migrate into Ha‘apai’s warm waters to mate, give birth and nurse calves. Matafonua Lodge runs daily whale-swimming and whale-watching excursions, led by knowledgeable guides who prioritise respectful, safe encounters with these majestic animals.
Ha’apai offers some of Tonga’s most untouched reefs. With fewer operators, diving here feels adventurous and exclusive. Signature sites include:
- Arch of Ofalanga: A massive coral arch and cavern system with pelagic visitors. Best for: advanced divers comfortable with overhead environments.
- Hot Spring Cave: A rare hydrothermal cavern where warmer water flows from volcanic vents. Best for: experienced adventure divers.
