Discover rarely visited reefs that few have seen before!

Take part in this year’s Great Reef Census Expedition, and discover rarely visited reefs that few have seen before.

The Great Reef Census is one of the world’s largest marine citizen science initiatives, which empowers every day individuals to contribute to valuable scientific research. By participating in the Census methodology, you will contribute your time and efforts to meaningful conservation outcomes, such as helping in the identification of “key source reefs” and “refugia”. You’ll witness firsthand the importance of Census as you collect crucial reconnaissance imagery. There are four tours to choose from:

Trip 2: 13 to 20 October – Science Under Sail – AUD  1900 pp

Experience the full range of splendour and diversity the Great Barrier Reef has to offer. You will get to survey rarely visited reefs adjacent to the mainland and throughout the Whitsunday group.

Trip 3: 23 to 30 October – Science Under Sail – AUD 2100 pp

This trip will provide the opportunity to visit the Percy Islands, including the famous ‘A frame’ (Percy Hilton). Snorkel and explore the reef while surveying sites like Great Keppel or the Capricorn Bunker group of reefs.

Trip 4: 5 to 7 December – GBR Safaris – AUD 899 pp

A bespoke expedition departing and returning to Mission Beach each day; exploring Otter, Beaver, Taylor, Eddy and Ellison reefs, along with the Barnard and Brook Island groups. Dive into citizen science and survey remote reefs with Dr. Adele Pile & GBR Safaris.

About the Reef Census Expeditions

Led by Science Under Sail Australia, who are committed to ocean conservation, research and sustainable practices – this expedition offers a unique opportunity to learn about different monitoring techniques and upskill in marine biology field techniques. You will be joined by an experienced marine scientist, Dr. James Udy, who also captains the RV Velella, a 40-foot (12m) sailing catamaran. James holds over 20 years of experience in applying marine scientific knowledge to improve environmental outcomes.

But it’s not just about the science – enjoy a week of sailing on board the RV Velella, where you’ll also learn about sailing and have the opportunity to assist with sail changes and adjustments. With low passenger numbers, this expedition offers a personalised experience, fostering a close-knit community of fellow adventurers.

Our itineraries take you to seldom visited destinations to explore the pristine reefs of the Capricorn Bunker region. Immerse yourself in the Reef environment and experience the vibrant marine life that it has to offer. This expedition caters to all demographics, inviting passionate ocean lovers and those seeking a unique educational experience. Whether you’re a seasoned snorkeler, or new to marine biology, these expeditions offer something for everyone.
