Adrenalin Snorkel and Dive is one of North Queensland’s most experienced reef tourism operators, offering diving, snorkelling and marine adventures from Townsville and Magnetic Island since 1987. Operating on the Central Great Barrier Reef, the company provides access to some of Australia’s most iconic dive destinations including the Museum of Underwater Art and the legendary S.S. Yongala wreck.
Known for its relaxed atmosphere and small-group experiences, Adrenalin Dive caters to everyone from first-time snorkellers to experienced divers. The crew includes marine biologists, PADI instructors, reef guides and skippers who focus on safety, marine education and personalised service both in and out of the water.

Facilities & Meals
Adrenalin Dive operates modern custom-built vessels for reef tours, dive training, private charters and whale watching cruises. Guests are provided with snorkelling and dive equipment, onboard refreshments, buffet-style lunches and experienced in-water supervision throughout the day. Morning and afternoon teas are included on most reef trips, with fresh fruit, salads, cold meats, breads and snacks served onboard.
Activities
Beyond scuba diving, guests can enjoy snorkelling tours, introductory dives, whale watching cruises, reef interpretation, private charters and visits to the Museum of Underwater Art. Seasonal humpback whale tours operate between July and September, while families and non-divers can explore coral reefs, marine life and island scenery throughout the year.
The scenic cruises explore the waters surrounding Cape Cleveland and Magnetic Island aboard the company’s custom vessels MV Adrenalin and MV Endorphin.
Staying Connected
Most day trips operate within mobile coverage range closer to Townsville and Magnetic Island, although coverage can become limited further offshore around remote reef systems and the Yongala wreck site.
We Think . . .
Adrenalin Dive combines experienced reef operations, professional dive training and small-group service with access to world-class dive sites. Its mix of beginner-friendly reef tours and advanced wreck diving makes it one of the best choices for exploring the Central Great Barrier Reef.
Based in Townsville, Adrenalin Dive is perfectly positioned for exploring the Central Great Barrier Reef. The region features coral bommies, reef walls, sandy lagoons and offshore wrecks teeming with tropical marine life. Warm tropical waters support colourful hard and soft corals alongside turtles, reef sharks, giant trevally, barracuda and manta rays.
The Central Great Barrier Reef offers a different experience from the northern reef systems. Dive sites around John Brewer Reef, Keeper Reef and Lodestone Reef are known for excellent visibility, healthy coral formations and diverse marine ecosystems. The area is also home to the Museum of Underwater Art, where underwater sculptures blend marine conservation with artistic expression.

Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA)
One of Adrenalin Dive’s signature experiences is visiting the Museum of Underwater Art at John Brewer Reef. Created by renowned sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, the museum combines marine conservation, Indigenous storytelling and underwater art installations.
Highlights include the Coral Greenhouse and the Ocean Sentinels, which serve both as artistic sculptures and artificial reef habitats supporting coral growth and marine life colonisation. Snorkellers can appreciate many sculptures from the surface, while divers can explore the installations up close.
Best Time to Dive
Diving is available year-round on the Central Great Barrier Reef, with water temperatures ranging from approximately 22°C in winter to 29°C during summer. Conditions are generally calmest between June and October, when visibility is often excellent and temperatures are comfortable both above and below the surface.
The warmer months from November to May bring warmer water, active reef fish populations and vibrant coral growth. Manta rays, reef sharks, turtles and schools of tropical fish can be seen throughout the year.
Whale watching season runs from July to September, when migrating humpback whales travel through the waters surrounding Townsville and Magnetic Island.
John Brewer Reef and the Museum of Underwater Art – John Brewer Reef is one of the region’s best-known reef systems and home to the remarkable Museum of Underwater Art. Coral bommies, sandy lagoons and reef walls attract turtles, reef sharks, trevally and schools of colourful reef fish.
The underwater sculptures created by Jason deCaires Taylor form artificial reef habitats where coral growth and marine life continue to develop naturally. The Ocean Sentinels and Coral Greenhouse installations provide both artistic and ecological highlights for snorkellers and divers.
Lodestone Reef and Keeper Reef – Lodestone Reef and Keeper Reef feature coral gardens, swim-throughs and reef gutters filled with tropical marine species. Divers regularly encounter clownfish, angelfish, parrotfish, stingrays and reef sharks in clear tropical water.
These reefs are ideal for beginner and intermediate divers due to generally moderate depths and calm conditions. Snorkellers also enjoy excellent shallow coral coverage close to the surface.
S.S. Yongala Wreck – The S.S. Yongala is widely regarded as one of the world’s best wreck dives. The 109-metre passenger steamer sank during a cyclone in 1911 and now rests approximately 30 metres below the surface as a thriving artificial reef.
Large Queensland groupers, giant trevally, barracuda, sea snakes, eagle rays and sea turtles are commonly seen around the wreck. The site is recommended for experienced divers due to depth and occasional strong currents, but the concentration of marine life makes it one of Australia’s true bucket-list dives.
