Tonga is one of the few places in the world where you can swim with humpback whales.
Every year from July to October the whales complete their migration from the feeding grounds of Antarctica to the warmer tropical waters of Tonga where they give birth to their calves and perform courtship readying themselves for the next season.
The Ha’apai Islands serve as one of Tonga’s most plentiful playgrounds for Humpback Whales. From mid-July to mid-October the Ha’apai Island area becomes one of the largest nurseries in the South Pacific for Humpbacks to birth and raise their young.
The Humpback Whales love the Ha’apai Islands as there are numerous natural protection areas and reefs that provide an excellent nursery to raise the calves. The Ha’apai area is also not overcrowded with whale watch boats, as there are only a few operators in this region and a very large area of coverage (you won’t have to wait to swim with a group of whales).
Whale encounters depart right from the beach in front of resorts. Lunch or afternoon tea is provided on the boat and you will usually stop for a break at one of the outer island reefs which you can snorkel on.
- 7 nights’ accommodation
- 7 days half board plan (breakfast & dinner)
- Round trip transfers from Ha’apai airport

Choose from budget Tongan-style Fales with shared facilities at Matafanua Lodge or Beachfront Fales with ensuite facilities at Sandy Beach Resort.
You do need to bring your own toiletries including sun cream and mosquito replant as you cannot buy these on the island.
The separate male and female bathroom block is a short stroll from all Fale’s, and has solar hot water in the showers at Matafonua but as mentioned Sandy Beach Fales each have ensuite facilities.
There is a bar and restaurant onsite serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks. Continental Breakfast is included and cooked breakfast (which is served all day) is available from NZ$12.00. We have a standard menu, which is available all day, and includes things like sandwiches, wraps, salads, pizzas and burgers and the prices range from NZ$7.50 -20.00. Each day we offer different dinner specials with prices ranging between NZ$18.00 – 40.00
Both resorts are situated on a white sandy beach (probably one of the best in Tonga) at the end of Foa Island.
Whale watching (including the possibility of whale swimming) is available between 15th July and 15th October guests are required to prebook this trip. You will have you very own experienced and knowledgeable guide. The best months are August and September. A maximum of 8 people on the boat with 4 in the water at a time.
SCUBA Diving in Ha’apai is spectacular. The reef system is pristine and alive with marine creatures large and small, a variety of hard and soft corals riddled with amazing tunnels and swim-throughs.
The boats are well maintained and carry all current safety gear including Epirb and oxygen. Dive gear is all kept in top condition and updated regularly.
Safe swimming and snorkelling in crystal clear blue water is available for all ages. 100 meters from the beach is a deserted island waiting for you to explore, kayak or swim over – it is up to you.
Other activities include Kite-boarding, stand up paddle-boarding, horse riding, bush walking, visiting local villages, viewing ancient rock carvings and taking part in a local kava session. Kayaks, bicycles, snorkel gear & wireless internet are all free. The resort can also organise a cultural tour of nearby Kao Vai island.
