Layang Layang Island is a small atoll in the middle of the South China Sea belonging to Malaysia. It is situated 300 km northwest of Kota Kinabalu in Sabah. Layang Layang Island Resort is the only resort and diving operator available on this small coral atoll but it has access to over 20 sites from coral reefs to the steep walls plummeting to 2000m below and swarming with tropical fish and pelagics. Note that the resort only operates between February and August each year, and the highlight is definitely the scalloped hammerhead sharks which are there from March to August, and often performing mating rituals between March and May.

On the artificially enlarged island is a bird sanctuary, a runway stretching the length of the island, a small naval base and the dive resort. There is no beach and no house reef on the island.

Facilities

Five buffet meals are offered daily with the kitchen serving a good variety of dishes. In the evening you can go to the bar to end the dive day with music and drinks. There is also a large swimming pool and the opportunity for windsurfing and kayaking.

Staying Connected

Mobile phones may work on the island under Celcom. Check with your phone provider back home if they have roaming capacity in Malaysia. Complimentary WiFi internet access is available in the lobby area of the resort.

We thinkā€¦

This remote atoll is definitely worth a dive trip, but be aware it is still a pretty big resort and it can get a bit hectic at the height of the season in April.
