1770 – gateway to the Southern Great Barrier Reef

You may have heard of Lady Elliot Island, famous for its resident manta population, but have you heard of Lady Musgrave Island – right next door? And the pristine reefs that stretch from here to Heron Island? Mantas can be encountered along this entire stretch of the Southern Great Barrier Reef, but there’s lots more to see here as well…

Located just 90 minutes north of Bundaberg, the town of 1770 is a diver’s gateway to some of the most untouched and remarkable marine environments on the Southern Great Barrier Reef. What sets this location apart is not only its breathtaking underwater scenery but also its sense of exploration and discovery, as divers can explore eight distinct reefs and over 70 dive sites, with hundreds of sites still waiting to be explored and even named—perhaps by you.

Heron Island Reef and Lady Musgrave Reef stand out as top dive sites. But what really draws divers here are the lesser explored reefs between these, like Lamont, Llewellyn, Boult, Sykes, Fitzroy and Wistari. Barely visited, each reef offering its own signature underwater landscapes, from vibrant coral gardens to dramatic drop-offs. Not to mention crystal-clear waters, and rich marine biodiversity.

Dive Spear and Sport 1770 has made these reefs home, roaming the Bunker Group Reefs that span the stretch from Lady Musgrave to Heron Island. Speeding out to the reef on our custom-built dive vessel, carrying a maximum of 20 passengers, we roam the reef system changing our location and exploring new locations on a weekly basis and providing a unique experience every day
